GEO vs SEO: What's the Difference and Do You Need Both?

By Trisha Seal · Seal Global Holdings

If you're familiar with SEO, GEO might sound like a rebranding exercise. It isn't. While they share foundations, GEO and SEO target fundamentally different outputs and require different strategies in key areas. This guide breaks down the difference, the overlap, and why the right answer in 2026 is almost always: both.

The core difference — a list vs an answer

SEO optimizes for a position in a list of 10 blue links. GEO optimizes for inclusion in a synthesized AI answer. The outputs are structurally different: in traditional Google, position 1 gets ~30% of clicks and position 10 still gets clicks. In AI search, there are no positions — typically 1–3 brands are cited in the entire response, and being outside those citations means zero visibility for that query.

What SEO does

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the practice of improving your website's visibility in traditional search engine results pages. It covers: on-page optimization (title tags, meta descriptions, header structure, keyword usage), technical SEO (site speed, crawlability, indexation, Core Web Vitals), link building (earning backlinks from authoritative domains), content marketing (creating content that ranks for target keywords), and local SEO (optimizing for geographic queries and Google Business Profile).

The goal of SEO is to rank as high as possible in organic search results for queries that your target buyers use.

What GEO does

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the practice of making your brand, content, and website visible in AI-generated answers — in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Copilot, and Gemini. It covers: schema markup implementation (FAQPage, Organization, Product, HowTo, Article), LLMs.txt creation (brand entity instructions for AI models), AEO content production (direct-answer Q&A content structured for AI extraction), entity building (making your brand recognizable as a consistent entity across the web), and brand citation building (getting your brand mentioned on authoritative sources that AI engines use for training data).

The goal of GEO is to be cited in AI-generated answers for queries your target buyers ask AI tools. Learn more about the fundamentals in our What Is GEO? guide.

Where they overlap

The foundations of SEO and GEO are largely the same — this is the good news:

  • Technical quality matters for both. A fast, crawlable, well-indexed site is the foundation of both SEO performance and GEO performance. Google uses technical quality signals for both its traditional rankings and its AI Overview citations.
  • E-E-A-T matters for both. Expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness are the signals Google uses to decide which content to rank — and which content to cite in AI Overviews. Building E-E-A-T (author credentials, third-party citations, organizational entity) improves both.
  • Content quality matters for both. Well-written, factually accurate, comprehensive content performs better in both traditional rankings and AI citations. The investments are aligned.
  • Backlinks contribute to both. Domain authority (built through backlinks) influences both traditional rankings and AI citation probability for engines that use training data or web index signals.

Where they diverge

Content format: SEO favors long-form, comprehensive content that covers a topic deeply. GEO/AEO favors short, direct-answer content structured in Q&A format. The same page can serve both — but you need to structure it to do both, which requires intentional content design.

Schema priorities: SEO schema focuses on site structure and product markup for rich results. GEO schema priorities are FAQPage and Organization above all else — because these directly influence AI citation eligibility. Most SEO programs underinvest in FAQPage schema.

Measurement: SEO is measured in keyword rankings, organic traffic, and click-through rate. GEO is measured in AI share of voice, brand mention rate across AI engines, and featured snippet holdings. Most companies have no GEO measurement in place at all.

Timeframe: SEO compounds over years. GEO is earlier-stage — the brands that establish AI search presence now will compound advantages as AI search volume grows. The window to establish early authority in AI search is open right now.

Do you need both?

Yes. The buyers who use traditional Google and the buyers who use AI tools are increasingly the same people — they use different tools for different stages or query types. A buyer might use Google for quick navigational searches and ChatGPT for complex research questions. Being visible in only one channel means being invisible to part of your audience.

More practically: the foundational work is largely the same. Investing in technical quality, E-E-A-T, and comprehensive content benefits both SEO and GEO. Adding GEO-specific elements (FAQPage schema, LLMs.txt, AEO content) to a site with a strong SEO foundation is significantly more efficient than building either from scratch.

How to prioritize

If you have no SEO foundation: build it first. Technical SEO, crawlability, and basic on-page optimization are prerequisites. GEO amplifies a site that Google can already crawl and index — it doesn't replace that foundation.

If you have a solid SEO foundation: add GEO now. The incremental investment is relatively small — FAQPage schema, LLMs.txt, and systematic AEO content production — and the competitive window is wide open. Most competitors are not doing GEO yet. See our dedicated Answer Engine Optimization page for the AEO piece.

If you're building from scratch: design for both from the start. Content architecture, schema planning, and entity building should be GEO-native from day one. Our AI Search Optimization program is built for this scenario.

Seal Global's integrated GEO + SEO approach

Seal Global builds GEO as a component of every digital engagement — not a separate service layer. Our ecommerce agency programs include GEO as standard. Our ecommerce marketing agency programs include GEO. This is because the two disciplines are most effective when they compound each other: SEO authority feeds GEO citation probability, and GEO citations build brand awareness that drives branded search volume, which feeds SEO.

Our integrated GEO services start from $1,500/month and include SEO and GEO together: technical SEO, schema implementation, AEO content, LLMs.txt, entity building, and monthly reporting across both traditional and AI search visibility.
