How a South Florida Business Went From Invisible to Recommended in AI Search

How does a South Florida business get recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews?

By fixing three layers in order. First, entity consistency: identical name, address, phone, hours, service list and service area across the website, Google Business Profile, Apple Maps, Yelp, Bing Places and top industry directories — inconsistency is the most common reason a model declines to name a business. Second, extractability: service and FAQ content that answers the question directly in quotable prose, with LocalBusiness and FAQPage schema. Third, corroboration: independent local sources that confirm and evaluate the business. Entity and schema fixes typically propagate in two to six weeks; durable citation share takes about six months.

By Trisha Seal · July 31, 2026 · Seal Global is headquartered in Miramar, Florida and runs AI search visibility programmes for South Florida businesses across Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach, backed by 25+ years of digital operations experience.

The owner had a reasonable complaint. Page-one rankings for the terms his previous agency tracked. A four-point-eight star average. Fourteen years in business in Broward County. And when he typed his own category into ChatGPT and asked which company he should hire near him, the assistant named three competitors and never mentioned him once. He ran it again the next day, in case it was a fluke. Same three names.

This is the most common pattern we see in South Florida, and it is not a ranking problem. What follows is how that engagement actually ran over 90 days — including the part that did not work. Details are generalised to protect the client, but the sequence, the timings and the diagnostic method are exactly as delivered.

Week one: the prompt panel, and what it exposed

We did not touch the website. We built a panel of 34 questions a real customer would ask — category plus neighbourhood, category plus "best", comparison questions naming competitors, and problem-first questions that never mention the category at all. Then we ran every question three times across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews and recorded three things: whether he was mentioned, where he sat among the named options, and which URL got cited.

Baseline mention rate was 6%. Worse, in the two answers where he did appear, the assistant cited a four-year-old directory listing with a phone number that had been disconnected since 2023. The model was not ignoring him. It could not work out who he was.

Week two to four: the unglamorous entity cleanup

We found nine conflicting facts across the web: two different suite numbers, three different service-hour sets, an old business name from before a rebrand, two phone numbers, and a service area that said "Miami" in one place and "South Florida" in another. Each inconsistency on its own is trivial. Collectively they make a language model uncertain, and an uncertain model reaches for a competitor it can describe confidently.

The fix was a single source-of-truth document and then thirty-one directory corrections, starting with Google Business Profile, Apple Maps, Yelp and Bing Places, then the industry directories that actually get cited in his category. This is standard local SEO services work that most agencies treat as a setup task and never revisit. It took eleven days and it did more than everything that followed.

Week four to seven: making the site quotable

His service pages read like brochures — three paragraphs of positioning before any concrete claim. Models cannot lift an answer out of that. We rewrote the top five pages so each opened with a direct, self-contained answer to the question the page targets, followed by specifics: what is included, what it costs, how long it takes, what the service area is. Then FAQ blocks in customer language, LocalBusiness and FAQPage schema, and a services list that matched the profile word for word.

Worth saying plainly: this is also just good writing. Every change that helped the assistants also raised the conversion rate on those five pages, because a visitor who gets the answer in the first sentence stays.

Week seven to twelve: corroboration, and the part that failed

Models weight independent sources heavily. We pursued three: a local business publication feature, two genuine category roundups, and a chamber listing refresh. Two landed. The third — a paid placement on a directory that looked authoritative — produced nothing measurable, and we cut it in week ten. We mention it because vendors rarely report the line item that did not work, and it was roughly 15% of the programme spend that quarter.

An honest note on keyword difficulty in this market

Before this engagement we tested eight candidate terms for an easy entry point in South Florida — "ai search optimization miami", "chatgpt seo miami", "generative engine optimization miami", "local ai search optimization", "ai search visibility service", "south florida seo agency", "south florida digital marketing agency" and "miami seo agency". None of them cleared our bar of difficulty under 35 with meaningful monthly volume. The closest was "miami seo agency" at roughly KD 39 and 260 searches a month, which narrowly misses.

We are saying that rather than inventing a quick win, because it changes the strategy: in this market the realistic path is head-term patience plus AI visibility, where the competitive field is thin and moves fast. A term like "digital marketing agency miami" at 1,600 searches a month and KD 52 is a twelve-month objective, not a quarter-one one — and the prompt panel is where you can show progress in the meantime.

The five steps, in the order they should run

  1. Build the prompt panel and record a baseline before touching anything.
  2. Resolve every conflicting business fact across the web to one source of truth.
  3. Rewrite priority pages to lead with the answer and add LocalBusiness plus FAQPage schema.
  4. Earn two or three genuine local corroborations and drop anything that does not move the panel.
  5. Re-run the panel monthly and manage to mention rate, not to rankings.

What this cost, and when to hire help

The programme ran at the lower end of the South Florida market — comparable to a mid-tier local retainer rather than a full-service agency engagement. The expensive part is not the tooling; it is the thirty-one directory corrections and the rewriting, which are labour. If your rankings look fine and revenue does not, buy a diagnosis before you buy a retainer: that is what our search optimization consultants do as a fixed-scope engagement. If you already know the gap is AI visibility, start with South Florida AI search optimization and keep the prompt panel as your scoreboard.

AI Search Basics

What is AI search optimization and how is it different from traditional SEO?

AI search optimization is the practice of making a business retrievable, extractable and citable by generative assistants — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google AI Overviews — rather than merely ranked in a list of links. Traditional SEO competes for a position; AI search competes for a mention inside a synthesised answer, where there is no page two. The overlapping work is crawlable content and authority. The distinct work is entity consistency across the web, question-and-answer formatting models can lift verbatim, schema markup, and corroboration on the third-party sources a model already trusts.

How does ChatGPT decide which local businesses to recommend?

It combines what it learned in training with live retrieval from the open web, then synthesises. In practice, three things determine whether a local business is named: whether the model can find consistent facts about it (identical name, address, phone, services and hours everywhere it looks), whether independent sources corroborate those facts and say something evaluative — directories, local press, review platforms, roundups — and whether the business's own pages answer the question directly in extractable prose. Popularity alone is not enough; a well-reviewed business with inconsistent data frequently gets skipped.

What is answer engine optimization (AEO) for South Florida businesses?

AEO is structuring your content so an answer engine can lift a clean, quotable response and attribute it to you. For a South Florida business that means service pages that state plainly what you do, where you do it and what it costs; FAQ blocks written in the language locals actually use, including bilingual phrasing where relevant; LocalBusiness and FAQPage schema; and consistent hours and service-area data across Google, Apple Maps, Yelp and industry directories. The goal is to be the sentence the assistant reproduces when someone asks for a recommendation in Miami, Fort Lauderdale or Palm Beach.

Why isn't my Miami business showing up in Google AI Overviews?

Usually one of five reasons: your pages answer indirectly, wrapping the answer in marketing prose the model cannot extract; your entity data conflicts across directories so the model cannot resolve who you are; you have no third-party corroboration in sources the model trusts; your schema is missing or malformed; or a competitor simply has a cleaner, more quotable page on that exact question. It is rarely a ranking problem — plenty of businesses ranking on page one of classic results are absent from the AI Overview above them.

Local / Miami Specific

How do I find a good digital marketing agency in Miami?

Ask for three things before anything else: two local clients you can call, a written month-one deliverable list, and confirmation that you own your website, ad accounts and Google Business Profile. Then check for market conflicts — Miami is dense enough that an agency may already serve a direct competitor in your category and neighbourhood. Prefer month-to-month or short-notice terms. And ask specifically how they handle AI search visibility; in 2026 an agency with no answer is selling a 2019 product.

What makes South Florida SEO different from national SEO?

Density, seasonality and language. Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach pack enormous competitive density into short distances, so proximity effects in the map pack are unusually sharp and a two-mile move changes your visibility. Demand is seasonal for tourism, hospitality, home services and cosmetic categories. And a large share of search happens in Spanish, so bilingual content and reviews are a genuine ranking and conversion factor rather than a nice-to-have.

Does Google Business Profile optimization affect AI search visibility in Miami?

Yes, substantially. Your profile is one of the most authoritative and most frequently crawled sources of structured facts about your business, and assistants lean on it to resolve who you are, where you operate and what you offer. A complete profile with the correct primary category, full service list, populated Q&A, current hours, recent posts and a healthy review stream both improves map pack position and strengthens the entity signals that determine whether an assistant is confident enough to name you.

How much does a Miami digital marketing agency typically cost?

Common 2026 ranges in the South Florida market: $1,000–$2,500 per month for local SEO only at a small independent, $2,500–$7,500 for a multi-channel programme at a mid-size agency, and $8,000 and up at established full-service shops, with paid media budgets separate. Project work such as a website rebuild typically runs $5,000–$40,000. Seal Global's AI search and organic programme starts at $1,500 per month with no long-term contract.

Getting Started

How do I know if my business needs AI search optimization?

Run the test yourself. Open ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini and ask each the way a customer would: 'best [your service] in [your city]', 'who should I hire for [problem] near [neighbourhood]', 'compare [your category] companies in South Florida'. Run each three times. If your business is not named in the majority of those answers while competitors are, you have a measurable gap — and if your classic rankings are fine, that gap is specifically an AI visibility problem, not an SEO one.

What's the first step to improving AI search visibility for a small business?

Fix your entity data before writing anything new. Make name, address, phone, hours, service list and service area identical across your website, Google Business Profile, Apple Maps, Yelp, Bing Places and the top industry directories in your category. Inconsistency is the single most common reason a model declines to name a business. Once facts are consistent, add extractable question-and-answer content and LocalBusiness plus FAQPage schema. Those two steps typically move citation share faster than any amount of blogging.

Can a South Florida business compete with national brands in AI search results?

In local-intent queries, yes — often more easily than in classic search. When someone asks an assistant for a recommendation in a specific neighbourhood, national brands frequently lack the local specificity and local corroboration to be the confident answer. A well-structured independent with consistent data, strong local reviews and genuinely locally-written content can outrank far larger competitors on those prompts. The advantage shrinks on generic, non-local questions where brand authority dominates.

Results & Measurement

How long does it take to see results from AI search optimization?

Entity and schema corrections often propagate within two to six weeks, which is faster than classic ranking movement. New extractable content typically starts appearing in citations at six to twelve weeks. Building the third-party corroboration layer — directories, local press, roundups — is the slow part and generally takes three to six months to change the model's confidence. A realistic expectation is early movement in the first quarter and durable citation share by month six.

How do I measure whether my brand is showing up in AI answers?

Define a fixed prompt set of 20–50 questions a real customer would ask, covering your services, your locations and your competitors. Run them on a fixed schedule across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, and record three things each time: whether you were mentioned, in what position among the named options, and which URL or source was cited. Track the mention rate over time. Because model outputs vary between runs, use the trend across repeated runs rather than any single answer.

What tools track AI search visibility for local businesses?

A number of dedicated platforms now monitor brand mentions across assistants, and mainstream SEO suites have added AI Overview tracking. They are useful but incomplete: coverage of ChatGPT and Perplexity varies, and local-intent prompts are handled inconsistently. In practice the most reliable method is a maintained manual or scripted prompt panel run on a schedule, supplemented by referral traffic from AI sources in analytics and by Search Console impressions on question-shaped queries.

Working With an Agency

What should I look for in a south Florida AI search optimization agency?

Four things. A measurement method — ask to see the prompt panel and a sample citation-share report before you sign. Named local references in South Florida. A written deliverable list covering entity cleanup, schema, content and corroboration, not just 'AI optimisation'. And honest expectation-setting: anyone promising a guaranteed ChatGPT ranking does not understand that there is no ranking to guarantee. Short contract terms are the fifth filter — confidence shows up in the notice period.

Do I need both traditional SEO and AI search optimization?

Yes, for now. Classic search still drives the majority of transactional discovery for most local businesses, and the crawlable, authoritative content it rewards is the same raw material assistants retrieve from. Running only classic SEO leaves you invisible in a fast-growing share of research; running only AI optimisation leaves money on the table in the channel that still converts most volume. The efficient approach is one content and entity programme measured against both scoreboards.
