What do search optimization consultants do?
Search optimization consultants diagnose why a site is not found in search results and AI answers, then set the order of work that fixes it: technical crawl and rendering health, page structure and content, external authority, and measurement. They sell judgment rather than production capacity, typically charging $125 to $350 an hour, $2,500 to $8,000 a month on retainer, or $3,000 to $15,000 for a standalone audit. The term itself draws about 8,100 US searches a month, which is why the market is crowded and the quality range is wide.
What search optimization consultants actually do
Search optimization consultants diagnose why a site is not being found and decide the order in which that gets fixed. The work has four moving parts: technical health, so pages can be crawled and rendered; page structure and content, so they match what people are searching for; external authority, so those pages are trusted; and measurement, so anyone can tell whether the last three worked. A consultant's output is a sequence, not a task list. Deciding what to leave alone matters as much as what to build.
The term draws roughly 8,100 US searches a month at a cost per click around $53, which tells you two things. Demand is real, and the buyers are commercial enough that the market attracts people selling reports rather than diagnosis. Screening for that difference is most of the job before you sign anything.
Consultant, agency, or in-house hire
A consultant sells judgment. An agency sells capacity. An in-house specialist sells context and internal authority. These are not interchangeable and buying the wrong one at a fair price still fails.
| Model | Typical annual cost | Fits when |
|---|---|---|
| Independent consultant | $30,000 – $96,000 | You can execute but keep guessing at priorities |
| Agency retainer | $42,000 – $120,000 | You need direction and hands |
| In-house specialist | $60,000 – $150,000 plus tools | Search is a permanent core channel |
| Audit plus internal delivery | $3,000 – $15,000 | Budget is tight and capacity exists |
The first question in any pricing conversation should be about your execution capacity, not the rate. A firm with a marketing coordinator and a developer needs direction. A three-person practice needs someone to do the work.
The small business SEO consultant, specifically
A small business SEO consultant does narrower work than a general one. The focus is local visibility, business profile management, service-page structure, review flow and a short list of commercial terms, usually working directly with an owner rather than a marketing team. The mechanics overlap with enterprise work; the sequencing and the amount of hand-holding do not.
The budget reality is worth stating plainly. Below about $750 a month you are funding two or three hours of senior attention, which will not shift a contested term. For constrained budgets we usually recommend a single concentrated audit at $3,000 to $6,000, executed internally over the following quarter, then revisited. Over twelve months that costs less than a thin retainer and produces more, because the thinking is not dribbled out in one-hour slices. If local search is the whole game, most of the value sits in profile accuracy, service pages that name the actual services, and consistent citations.
How to screen candidates
Ask a candidate to describe their least successful engagement and what they would do differently. People who have carried a programme past month six name a specific decision that went wrong. Report writers describe a difficult client. It costs nothing and filters faster than a portfolio review.
Second, ask what they would decline to sell you. A consultant who wants every service in scope on day one is optimising for contract value. One who says your site structure needs fixing before any content spend makes sense is telling you something that costs them money in the short term, which is the strongest signal available. Third, ask how they measure success, and listen for a written baseline. In our own engagements the baseline document is produced in week one, before any change ships, because without it nothing after it can be verified.
AI answers are now part of the scope
Being cited inside AI-generated answers is a separate discipline from ranking, and it should appear as a named line in the scope rather than being quietly bundled or quietly dropped. The work involves tracking a defined set of buyer prompts across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Perplexity, then improving the structured, quotable content those systems draw from. That is what AI search optimization covers, and the content structuring side sits under generative engine optimization. Expect it to add roughly 20 to 30 percent to a programme.
What a realistic timeline looks like
Technical fixes move impressions within two to six weeks. Content and authority work generally needs four to seven months before it shows in qualified enquiries, and longer in dense metro markets. Category matters too: a dental practice competing in one city behaves differently from a law firm operating inside state conduct rules. Judge your first quarter on whether the diagnosis proved correct, not on revenue. Anyone promising commercial results in 30 days is either renaming a technical clean-up or does not expect to still be there in month six.
One honest caveat: nobody can predict a specific position or a specific AI citation, because the systems that grant them change without notice. What a good consultant can commit to is the diagnosis, the sequence, the cadence and the measurement. Treat anything firmer than that as a sales device.
