Is AI search optimization only worth it for Miami businesses?
No. Treating South Florida as Miami-only is the most expensive assumption in this market. Fort Lauderdale carries higher search volume than Miami for several agency-category terms while sitting at materially lower keyword difficulty, and Broward and Palm Beach businesses face far less deliberate competition for the same AI citations. The optimisation work — entity consistency across your site, Google Business Profile and directories, structured data, LLMs.txt, content written for extraction, and review substance — is identical regardless of county. The competitive economics are simply better north of the Miami-Dade line.

The market has an assumption problem
Almost every South Florida business we audit is operating on at least three of the eight beliefs below. Individually they cost visibility. Together they produce the most common outcome we see: a business that is spending real money on marketing and is not named once when a prospect asks an AI assistant for a recommendation in its own category.
Each myth below is followed by what is actually true, and what to do about it.
Myth 1: AI search only matters if you are in Miami.
This is the most expensive regional myth in the market. Fort Lauderdale carries higher search volume than Miami for several agency-category terms, at materially lower difficulty. Broward and Palm Beach businesses are competing for the same AI answers with a fraction of the competition — the optimisation work is identical, the maths is simply better north of the county line.
Myth 2: SEO is dead, so classic rankings no longer matter.
AI Overviews and assistants draw predominantly from pages already ranking on page one. Technical health, authority and content quality are the entry ticket to being cited at all. What died is the assumption that a top-three position automatically produces a click.
Myth 3: AEO and GEO are just SEO with new vocabulary.
They share a technical foundation and diverge in format and target. SEO competes for a position in a list; AEO competes to be the extracted answer; GEO competes to be the named source inside a generated response. The measurement is different too — citation share on a fixed prompt set, not average position.
Myth 4: You need a huge budget to be cited by AI.
Citation depends on entity consistency, structured data and clear answers far more than on spend. A small Broward business with rigorous profile hygiene and well-structured pages is routinely cited alongside firms spending ten times more, because models are resolving ambiguity, not ranking budgets.
Myth 5: Adding schema markup is enough.
Schema is necessary and insufficient. If your site, Google Business Profile and directory listings describe your business differently, perfect schema just states one version of a contradiction. Consistency across sources is what moves citation; schema makes that consistency machine-readable.
Myth 6: AI search results are random, so you cannot influence them.
They are probabilistic, not random. Run the same prompt across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini weekly and you will see a stable set of businesses appearing. Perplexity even shows its sources, which makes it the easiest engine to test against and the fastest feedback loop you have.
Myth 7: Results should show up in 30 days.
Entity and profile consistency work often appears in AI answers within six to ten weeks. Content and authority work behaves like SEO — four to eight months on competitive terms. Anyone quoting thirty days for a competitive South Florida category is describing a coincidence.
Myth 8: A national agency is always stronger than a regional one.
For locally-bounded demand, a regional partner usually wins on market knowledge, directory and press relationships, and accountability. For national ecommerce or SaaS demand, geography is irrelevant and you should buy the best operator regardless of address. Choosing local purely for proximity is the wrong reason either way.
The Fort Lauderdale point, in more detail
Myth one deserves numbers, because it is the one that changes budget decisions. The pattern across agency-category and service-category terms in this region is consistent: Fort Lauderdale variants frequently match or exceed Miami variants on volume while sitting well below them on difficulty.
| Market | Relative volume | Relative difficulty | Practical read |
|---|---|---|---|
| Miami / Miami-Dade | High | High | Requires sustained spend to compete |
| Fort Lauderdale / Broward | High — often higher | Materially lower | Best return per dollar in the region |
| Palm Beach | Moderate | Low to moderate | Underserved, fast to win |
The mistake that follows from the myth is not ignoring Fort Lauderdale — it is copying a Miami page and swapping the city name. Duplicated location pages with a find-and-replace city are the reason most multi-city local strategies underperform. Each market needs its own service-area content, its own review base, and its own directory footprint — the unglamorous half oflocal SEO services that decides whether a second market ever ranks.
Why your business is not showing up in AI answers
In our audits it is almost always one of four things, and rarely something exotic:
- Inconsistent entity data. Your site, Google Business Profile, Yelp and industry directories disagree about your name, address, categories or service area.
- Answers buried in narrative. The information exists, three hundred words below a scene-setting introduction, where nothing will lift it — this is precisely what answer engine optimization corrects.
- No structured data. Organization, LocalBusiness and FAQPage schema absent, or present but injected by JavaScript that a crawler never executes.
- No third-party corroboration. Nothing outside your own website confirms what you claim, so no model will state it confidently.
All four are fixable in weeks rather than quarters, which is why AI visibility work tends to produce faster movement than classic ranking work for local businesses. If you want a second opinion on which of the four applies to you, independent search optimization consultants will diagnose it before anyone sells you a content plan.
What it costs in South Florida
| Monthly budget | Scope | Fit |
|---|---|---|
| $750–$1,500 | Entity consistency, GBP, schema, LLMs.txt, review system | Single-location local business |
| $1,500–$3,000 | Above plus content restructuring and AI citation monitoring | Competitive local category |
| $3,000–$8,000 | Above plus multi-location, authority building, press | Multi-location or high-value services |
| $5,000+ | Full-service including paid media | Growth-stage regional brand |
Below roughly $500 per month you are buying templated work executed at scale. That is not a moral judgement, it is arithmetic about how many hours a month that budget buys. At the upper bands the work overlaps heavily with ourgenerative engine optimization services, where authority and third-party corroboration carry more weight than on-site fixes.
The one test that settles an agency conversation
Ask for the tracked prompt set. An agency doing genuine AI search optimization can show you which prompts it monitors across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, your current citation share on each, and what changed month over month.
An agency that cannot produce that is selling SEO with updated vocabulary. It might still be good SEO — but you should know which one you are buying. Practices and firms in this region can compare the vertical versions of the same programme on ourdental marketing andlaw firm marketing pages.
