What should a law firm marketing agency actually be doing in 2026?
A law firm marketing agency should run twelve things: intake diagnosis and speed-to-contact, Google Business Profile and map pack optimisation, practice-area pages per office, long-tail before head-term targeting, a compliant review engine, Local Services Ads measured on cost per signed matter, visible attorney authorship, AI search visibility, fee transparency content, earned corroboration from directories and press, reporting segmented by matter type, and a quarterly kill list. US costs typically run $1,500–$3,000 per month for solos and $6,000–$20,000 for firms of six to twenty attorneys.

Legal is the most expensive local category in the United States. Clicks run to $300 in personal injury, incumbents have a decade of links, and lead vendors resell the same enquiry to four firms in your zip code. That environment punishes generic effort brutally — which is why the strategies below are ordered by return on the next dollar, not by how impressive they sound in a pitch deck. A capable law firm marketing agency should be able to tell you which of the twelve applies to you and which does not.

The twelve strategies, ranked by return on the next dollar
- Fix intake before you buy a single click. Pull thirty recorded calls and count answered, qualified and converted. Most firms are losing more matters to voicemail than to competitors. Speed to first contact is the strongest predictor of signing in every practice area we measure.
- Own the map pack in your primary jurisdiction. Correct primary category, complete practice-area services, weekly posts, populated Q&A, real office photography and a live review stream. This is the fastest movement available to any firm and it usually shows in six to twelve weeks.
- Build one page per practice area per office. Not a services list. A page that explains the process, the timeline, the fee structure, the jurisdiction specifics and the questions clients actually ask. This is what ranks and what converts.
- Go long-tail before you go head-term. Ranking for "car accident lawyer [city]" takes six to eighteen months. Ranking for specific injury types, specific courts and specific circumstances takes two to four months and often converts better.
- Install a review engine with a compliance step. Post-matter requests on every closed file, no gating, attorney-reviewed responses. Legal review response carries confidentiality constraints, so template the replies and get them approved once.
- Treat Local Services Ads as a distinct channel. LSAs sit above the map pack and price per lead rather than per click, typically $60–$250 depending on market. Measure them on cost per signed matter, never on lead count.
- Make attorney authorship visible. Legal is a YMYL category. Named authors with real credentials, bar admissions and jurisdiction detail measurably outperform anonymous content, and they are what AI models look for when deciding whether to cite a source.
- Win the AI shortlist. Clients now describe their situation to an assistant before they search. Entity consistency across bar listings and directories, extractable Q&A content and credential markup determine whether you are one of the three firms named.
- Publish fee transparency. Contingency structure, consultation cost, and what happens if you lose. Firms that answer this plainly convert better and get quoted more often in generated answers, because it is the question nobody else answers directly.
- Earn corroboration, not just links. Legal directories, local press, bar association listings and genuine community coverage carry weight in both classic ranking and model confidence. Bulk link buying in legal is a liability, not a tactic.
- Segment reporting by matter type. A family law enquiry and a catastrophic injury enquiry do not belong in the same "leads" number. Cost per signed matter by practice area is the only figure that supports a budget decision.
- Run a quarterly kill list. Every quarter, name the channel or campaign with the worst cost per signed matter and cut it. Firms that never cut anything accumulate spend that nobody can defend.
Law Firm SEO Services: the subset that does the heavy lifting
Strip the twelve down and four of them are law firm SEO services in the narrow sense: profile and map pack work, practice-area pages, earned corroboration, and technical and schema hygiene. Those four are where the compounding happens. Paid channels buy volume at a fixed price forever; the SEO subset lowers your blended cost per signed matter every quarter it runs.
The mistake firms make is buying the SEO subset and measuring it on the paid channel's timeline. Ninety days is a diagnostic window, not a verdict. Firms that cancel at month five consistently cancel one quarter before break-even, then repeat the cycle with a new vendor. If you genuinely cannot tell whether the programme is working or the market is simply hard, that is a diagnosis worth buying once — our search optimization consultants run exactly that review as a fixed-scope engagement rather than a retainer.
What each firm size should expect to spend
| Firm size | Organic + local / month | Paid / month | Time to first signed matter from search |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solo | $1,500–$3,000 | $1,000–$4,000 | 6–12 weeks |
| 2–5 attorneys | $2,500–$6,000 | $3,000–$10,000 | 8–16 weeks |
| 6–20 attorneys | $6,000–$20,000 | $10,000–$40,000 | 3–6 months |
| Multi-office plaintiff | $20,000+ | $40,000+ | 4–8 months |
The compliance layer nobody budgets for
State bar advertising rules govern specialisation claims, testimonials, past-results statements and required disclaimers, and they vary by jurisdiction. Build an attorney sign-off step into publishing rather than retrofitting compliance after a complaint. It costs a day of process design and removes an entire category of risk. Responsibility stays with the firm regardless of what the vendor agreement says.
Where AI search fits for firms in dense metros
Prospective clients increasingly describe their situation to an assistant and ask which firms handle it. That shortlist is decided by entity consistency, credential markup and third-party corroboration — not by your position on a results page. Firms competing across Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach should read our South Florida AI search optimization approach, and firms nationally can start with our generative engine optimization services.
